Blackboard Bi-Weekly Maintenance Window

To remain proactive about system maintenance and to prevent unscheduled downtimes and service outages, the UTHSC Blackboard team follows a bi-weekly maintenance schedule. Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday from 5:30 a.m. - 6:30 a.m., the Blackboard team reserves a maintenance window for urgent or non-disruptive service, typically characterized by, but not limited to, one or more of the following:

  • Re-start of Blackboard servers
  • Addresses moderately disruptive maintenance needs that are critical to the current continued stability and usability of our Blackboard system
  • Brief or no downtime needed, minimal periods where Blackboard is unavailable or periodically interrupted
  • Minor to Moderate user interface or feature enhancements
  • Routine network, hardware, or software service that has little or no effect on the Blackboard system itself, but rather on the supporting hardware/software structure that is integral to the delivery and availability of the Blackboard system

December Extended Maintenance Window

Each December, after the Fall term ends and before the holiday break, the Blackboard team reserves an extended maintenance window for major system upgrades typically characterized by, but not limited to, one or more of the following:

  • Significant user interface or feature enhancements.
  • Lengthy downtime requirements during which Blackboard will be unavailable or frequently interrupted
  • System maintenance vital to the continued long term stability and usability of our Blackboard system.

Emergency Maintenance Periods

At times, unexpected and potentially dangerous events arise without warning and must be addressed immediately. When this occurs, the Blackboard team acts swiftly to address these potentially hazardous issues and maintain the stability of our system and the content stored within. Services are typically characterized by, but not limited to, one or more of the following:

  • Fixes absolutely necessary for the continued use of the Blackboard system
  • Service to major components of the Blackboard system or its supporting structure that have failed unexpectedly
  • Time sensitive security patches and updates
  • Typically no interface or feature enhancements
  • May require an undetermined amount of downtime during which Blackboard will be unavailable or frequently interrupted
